I am Sad & Horrified....

....after reading this post on MumbaiGirl's blog. I came upon it accidentally but it has really shaken me up.

It is not a great statistic to have - almost every girl / woman has had at least one experience of molestation or forced sexual assault in her lifetime till date and this may be even as less as 7 years. Even the guys have not been spared though the frequency may be lesser than with women.

All of a sudden, I feel extremely lucky to have had such a un-tainted childhood. But at the same time, it makes me wonder what we are coming to when people would have to think about their childhood and consider themselves lucky to have had a normal one, something which so taken for granted.

Just thinking about those scores of men and few women who perpetrate such atrocities make me sick; what kind of mindset would these excuses for humans carry about? Do they even have any logic to explain why they act this way?

The worst part is that in most cases, they get away scotfree and are at still at large maybe lurking around for newer victims. And to top it all, people actually are derisive towards the victims if facts are out in the open, as if its all their fault that they were so abused!

Am really feeling sad!!! To think so many of the wonderful girls / ladies I have known over the years might have had to go through this...to say nothing of all the others who I don't even know! :-(

Agree with you totally. The reasons these molestations have increased are
a) Due to media presentations which motivate these guys. There are many who have confessed to these acts.

b) Blindly apeing western outfits. Offcourse every woman has the right to go nude but please think for a moment, when petrol is kept near fire - its allways the petrol which is ignited and destroyed. Take care there.

c)Proper setup of institutions which recognize mental disorders, nervous system problems and treat them with right counselling. High time we admitted such desceased people are around us and take care.

d) Woman who have taken up jobs which is a modern concept had these as side effects first in the western countries. The same is coming to be true here too.

cheers

Mohan: Thanks for your assent that the problem does exist! I have some questions for each of your reasons as below:
a) If media presentations were so motivating, I'd want to know why the other 90% of media presentations that advocate equality of women, request their empowerment, discourage female infanticide and basically showcase the role of women in betterment of society at large do not influence these guys as much?

b) Though I have not heard of any Indian woman being eve-teased or sexually harassed being nude of her own free will, I will give you the benefit of the doubt and not take it literally. How can you give the "petrol near fire" example? Are we living in a lawless age when men are simply baser and all they can think of is pillaging a woman when a little of her skin is visible? And men = fire? Please, give me a break. If they were so fiery, they would not need to take support of anonymity to perform their misdeeds. Also, there is no statistic which proves that a Western outfit draws more incidents than Indian ones.

c) I don't have any question here. I only wonder how many such institutions we would need to treat the multitude of "patients" that we seem to generate on a daily basis. And also, who would treat them?

d) Side effects of women taking up jobs? Is this even a relevant reason? Does this mean that you think all girls / women should be herded into their homes and kept there under lock and key?

Sachin,

You have all the laws possible in this country to protect the woman - Pray tell me why then you are ranting about its failure?

You can bash up and ignore all of them and rant but no resluts pal!!

Analyze the data for these issues 30 years back - give a 50% upgrade to reported complaints on the assumption that 50% went unreported. The data stares at you that there is a jump start to these activites in the last 25years - Now you conclude your own reasons before reanting right?

Offcourse everybody have their right to opinion isnt it.

Mohan:
You have missed the point of my post completely. Nowhere am I ranting about the failure of laws protecting. Rather what I am trying to say here that "in spite" of them, the atrocities continue.

You are right when you say that most of these incidents are unreported. If you read my post carefully, you'd see that I've mentioned that the sad part is that when such events come to be known, most people would gladly point a finger at the lady under question and say that she must have instigated it in some way. With rampant two-facedness, which woman would want to report the crime when she is aware that after all, she would be the one being publicly humiliated.

Having said that, if you really compare these stats for the past 30 years, you would see the number of such incidents being brought out in the open has gone up drastically now - all alluding to the fact that today's woman is stronger and better empowered and is aware that facing the problem head on and combatting it is the only way to eliminate it.

The 25% jump start figure gets calculated only because now people are aware of these crimes, earlier they were not even mentioned by the victims; maybe, for all you know, the number could have even been higher!

Lastly, yes, you are completely entitled to keep your opinion and argue for it.

Sachin,

Opiniong what you have stated. You have not RANTED but say "INSPITE" of laws these things happen. WHY?

Dear - You still have thrown the baby along with bathtub OUT. We all know the "inspites" but why does this inspite happen? Any insights on that?

You have sucessfully ignored all evils in the name of modern rules, ignored the scientific reasons. No problem.

This is where the buck stops. A full stop.

Mohan: Would you care to elaborate on the "evils" that are being perpetrated as per you? Also, kindly let me know what scientific reasoning provided by you have I ignored?

Because if you are trying to say that a woman dressing in Western clothes or going out and working alongside men is evil and is also a valid reason for men to commit crimes against them, then I simply don't agree.

Also, could you please point out where this particular post of mine was analyzing crimes against women. I was only voicing my angst against the happenings - nowhere have I given or asked for any scientific reasoning for the same. I hope you are not mixing this post and my previous one.

Sachin,
Cool down man. You and me alone debating this issue is not end of world.

Harmones are scientific facts. If you dont want them too - man does not have choice. Same with estrogen for woman.

I have said enough about woman dressing, man seeing, crime et all. I have not asked them to sit at home in viels - they are free to roam the roads in nude and that is NOT the basis for any crime from anybody what so ever!

What is being ignored by you repeatedly is the root cause. What according to you are the reasons these are happening then ?
